Ski & Ride for a Cure – A Family’s Fight, A Community’s Hope

Cancer has touched all of our lives, but together, we can do something about it.

Each year, our family comes together for Ski & Ride for a Cure to raise awareness, honor those we’ve lost, support those still fighting, and celebrate those who have overcome. This event isn’t just about skiing or snowboarding—it’s about love, resilience, and hope.

For us, this event is deeply personal. We ski and ride for our family, our dad, our grandpa, our friends, and so many others. We do this to remember, to heal, and to make a difference.

We also fundraise in creative ways, from Treats for a Cure—where we bake and bring our community together—to collecting cans, every little bit helps. And thanks to the generosity of people like you, we can continue supporting organizations like the Willamette Valley Cancer Foundation and Seeds of Hope, which provide financial and emotional assistance to families impacted by cancer.

On March 1st & 2nd, we’ll hit the slopes at Mt. Hood Skibowl to ski into the night, knowing that every run, every donation, and every moment spent together is making an impact.

Cancer sucks, but you are awesome. Thank you for your support, for standing with us, and for helping bring hope to those who need it most.

With gratitude,
Cooney Fam Ski

Please help me support Ski & Ride for a Cure by making a donation through my page. The process is fast, easy, and secure. Thank you so much for your support—and please share this with anyone who might want to contribute!

When I was diagnosed with cancer, it changed my life in ways I never expected. It was overwhelming, and I didn’t always know how to talk about it. With the support of my family, friends, and medical team, I made it through, and I’m grateful to say that I’m doing well today.

I first participated in Ski & Ride for a Cure in 2017, and it became more than just an event—it became a way for me to give back and connect with others who understand the impact of cancer. It’s something I look forward to each year, not just for the time spent on the slopes with family and friends, but also for the opportunity to support two incredible organizations:

  • Willamette Valley Cancer Foundation – Helping cancer patients and their families by providing financial assistance so they can focus on treatment instead of costs.
  • "See Ya Later" Foundation – Seeds of Hope – Offering support and meaningful experiences for children and families facing a life-threatening illness.

I don’t often talk about my own experience with cancer, but this event gives me a way to channel that journey into something positive. Seeing the generosity of so many people coming together to help those in need is a reminder of the good that can come from even the most difficult experiences.

If you're able to donate, thank you. If you're able to share this, I appreciate it. And if you’re considering getting involved in the event, I can say firsthand that it’s an incredible way to make a difference.

Together, we can help ease the burden for families going through one of the hardest times in their lives. Thank you for your support!

Cancer sucks...but you are awesome!
Thank you for donating and helping people that are fighting and facing cancer. It is hard to believe that I joined this event 8 years ago and all of you have supported me and these incredible people each year. Thank you!
8 years ago, when I first participated in Ski & Ride for a Cure, I thought that the hate of cancer was the common thread that brought everyone together at the awesome fundraising event. However, I quickly realized it is not the hate that brings us together, but rather, we are brought together by the love for the people around us who suffer and fight this terrible disease.
Ski & Ride for a Cure is an event where we celebrate life, partake in fun group activities, and support one another. I Ski & Ride for a Cure because my brother, Sean, has taken on the daily battle with cancer for nearly a decade. This event allows our entire team and family to provide hope and support to him and so many others facing cancer.
Prior to Ski & Ride for a Cure, cancer simply occupied a negative space in our family. Now, we have an event where we stand up and do something positive.
On March 1st & 2nd, we will ski into the night and the early morning hours at Mt Hood Skibowl in Government Camp, Oregon in order to raise money to help people facing cancer. Feel free to donate or come on out and join us and the other teams of people to show your support and love for those facing cancer.
 Again, thank you! Patrick

I’m really excited for 2025’s Ski and Ride for a Cure! This will be my sixth year participating as a skier on Team Cooney Fam Ski, but I’ve been a supporter for even longer. Skiing with my family is one of my favorite things, and this event makes it even more special. It also reminds me of my Grandpa Mike, who passed away from pancreatic cancer before I was born. He loved skiing with my dad and uncle, and I love hearing stories about him. This event helps me feel connected to him and to so many others affected by cancer.

I take part in this fundraiser to honor family members we’ve lost, support those still fighting, and help fund research and care. Cancer is something I wish no one had to go through, and I want to do my part to make a difference.

This fundraiser supports two amazing organizations:

  • Willamette Valley Cancer Foundation – This foundation helps cancer patients and their families with financial assistance so they can focus on treatment instead of the costs that come with it.
“See Ya Later” Foundation – Seeds of Hope – This program provides support for children and families when a child or parent is diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. They offer meaningful experiences, essential gifts, and services to make life a little easier during such a difficult time.

To raise money, I also host “Treats for a Cure”, where I help my mom bake cookies and brownies, and we make hot chocolate with whipped cream. Also this year we added cupcakes, rice krispies, some new cookies, and hot cider.I love seeing family, friends, and neighbors come out to support this cause!  I appreciate all the people who came out to us this year. 8 years going strong of the sale. Some even bring bags of cans to donate for recycling money, which is such a cool way to help. Special thanks to my mom and dad for helping my sister and me.

I can’t wait to hit the slopes this year and see how much we can raise for this incredible event! Thank you for your support!

Please help me raise money for those facing cancer.

We all have our reasons for doing things in life.

My reason for doing Ski & Ride for a Cure is simple—I do it for the joy. I do it to see family and friends. I do it to raise awareness. I do it for those who can’t. I do it for past family members who have died of cancer. I do it for my dad, who has cancer. Ski & Ride for a Cure is something that I will never forget.

My family started participating in Ski & Ride for a Cure in 2017 with my dad. Then, in 2018, my uncle and I joined. In 2019, more family and friends participated, and even more joined in 2020.

My sister and I wanted a way to help donate, so in 2017, we started Treats for a Cure. My mom bakes a lot of delicious treats and makes hot cocoa. We open our garage and invite the community for one day, and all the money is donated to our Ski & Ride for a Cure fundraising page. This year was our 9th time, and we were able to raise over $1,000! Thank you to everyone who supported us!

The world went into lockdown the weekend after the 2020 Ski & Ride for a Cure event. Knowing we couldn’t host our treat stand in 2021, but still wanting to raise money, my sister and I started collecting cans as another way to fundraise. We continue to do so today!

My family looks forward to Ski & Ride for a Cure every year. We remember the loved ones we have lost to cancer, honor those still fighting, and celebrate the ones who have overcome it. My Mom, Nana, Uncle Patrick, and Dad tell us stories about my Grandpa Mike, who passed away from pancreatic cancer before I was born. We also remember and share stories about my Nana's late husband, Pete.

To me, Ski & Ride for a Cure is a time to remember, honor, and heal. It is a time to celebrate the lives of loved ones we’ve lost and to appreciate the people around us. I’m looking forward to being out on the slopes again—together, we can finish cancer!
